Lasting
thirteen days from 12-24 January, 2010, the course will focus on the most
lively and extraordinary festivals of the entire region. The "Grande
Fiesta de Chapa" is our focus with its origins dating back to the first years
of the Spanish Conquest and is held annually in the colonial town of Chapa de
Corzo, about 15 km (10 miles) from the state capital of Tuxtla Gutierrez.
The entire city celebrates this integration with community rituals, having
great appeal for photographers, that consists of long days full of festivities
which follow right after the other into folk festivals with recurring religious
themes; "El Senor de Esquipulas" one of the most important Catholic venerations
in Central America, the "Fiesta de San Sebastian" and the "Fiesta de San
Antonio Abdad" with parades of allegorical floats and special events in the
plazas, traditional masks and typical costumes reflecting the traditional
indigenous culture.
We will be
based in Chapa de Corzo during the festival. The extraordinary magic of
this event and the unique atmosphere in which it takes place will help us
overcome the people's distrust toward photography. We will photograph
every day with daily editing of the completed work.
The last day
will be totally dedicated to a final editing, when every student will select
their best work. We will conclude with a "despedida", a farewell
party, in perfect Mexican style and relive our moments of this unforgettable
experience and discuss our future photography projects.
The workshop
is geared for advanced amateurs and for professionals. Please include a
brief description of your photographic experience as well as a selection of
your best work (10-15 images, jpeg 650 pixel lengthwise, 72 dpi) For
practical purposes each student is advised to use a digital camera. One
camera with only one lens will be sufficient. It is best to use a 28 to
50 mm focus. For those that have a zoom, this will be a chance to use it
as your only lens. We advice anyone brings his own laptop for downloading
images and editing one's own work at the end of any working day.
Practical information
The cost of the workshop includes
lodging (13 nights) in a delightful colonial era hotel in the historical center
of Chapa de Corzo.
Round trip airport transfers from
Tuxtla Gutierrez (TGZ) to our hotel.
Airfare and meals are the
participants' responsibility.
For practical reasons, students are
advised to use a digital camera.
Everyone should bring their own
laptop to download images and edit their own work.
It is advisable to arrive the day
before the workshop begins to allow time to become acquainted with the area, rest
and overcome jet lag.

of the course, return flights should be for January 25th.
